Instructor:  Kirsten Lee

Description: Discover the joy of urban sketching in this fun, beginner-friendly class where we break down the city into simple shapes and dynamic scenes. Learn how to draw the energy of the city using nothing more than rectangles, circles, and a pencil! Through step-by-step guidance, you’ll gain confidence sketching from life and capturing the structure of the street with quick, expressive lines.

Perfect for absolute beginners or more experienced sketchers, this half-day session will have you seeing the city with new eyes. You’ll learn the secrets of perspective, proportion, and composition—plus tips to keep your sketches loose, lively, and full of personality. Come ready to draw, laugh, and leave with pages full of urban stories.

We will begin in the classroom, learning or reviewing the basic artistic elements that support the creation of a successful sketch.  Armed with new knowledge, we will take our sketchbooks into downtown Martinsburg to capture city scenes.  We will wrap up back in the classroom reviewing material, questions remaining, and possible next steps.

Age Range: 12-adult, minors must have parent present at all times.

Materials:

Sketchbook or paper with support, such as a clipboard

Pencil  (regular mechanical ones work great!)

Eraser

More experienced sketchers may bring any additional sketching materials you are comfortable with and wish to use (pens, watercolors, colored pencils, etc.)

About the Instructor:
Kirsten Lee is an award-winning multi-disciplinary artist living and creating in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia. Her explorations are linked by the search for “the soul of a space, the space of a soul.” She encourages and enables her students to express the unruly mysteries of nature.

Kirsten comes to art with an unconventional, self-directed background. She interprets environments and creates fresh images with an artist’s eye, a scientist’s mind and a poet’s heart, while sharing the experience with a teacher’s generosity. Kirsten’s work is often seen in locally and nationally juried exhibitions, and in group and solo shows.  Her two 177″x36″ mosaic designs sparkle on local park bridges as anchors of a community arts installation. She furthers creativity in community through serving on the boards of several not-for-profit arts organizations, as well as offering ongoing arts instruction.
